As she was finishing up her time in the Peace Corps, one of her friends from Stanford called her. He now worked as a mechanical engineer for NASA.

“Guess what?” he said. “NASA is looking for a new batch of astronauts.”

Once again, Mae had a choice to make. Astronaut or biomedical engineer? Which should she choose?

In October 1985, Mae called up NASA. Here goes nothing, she thought. She was sure they’d laugh at her when she asked for an application.

They didn’t laugh. They sent her an application. Mae filled it out and put it in the mail. Then she returned to Los Angeles to work as a doctor. She took an extra engineering course at night. This way she’d be ready to go to graduate school if NASA didn’t choose her.
